Illamasqua Skin Base | Review

I remember the day I bought this foundation. I was in the city (Sydney) looking for wedding shoes and wanted to to do a little beauty shopping. I stopped by the Illamasqua counter in Myer at Pitt St Mall and the lovely staff there trialled some products on me. I ended up taking three products home! Keep reading to see what I think about Illamasqua Skin Base!

Skin Base foundation by Illamasqua is said to be inspired by the cult Asian beauty product, the beauty balm. It is meant to be easily blendable to create a the perfect canvas and is undetectable in HD environments. It is suitable for all skin types and contains vitamin C and E to help soften and condition the skin.

Looking at the Myer online store, there is 25 shades available in Skin Base which ranges from very pale to deep. I was matched to the shade SB08 which is around the middle of the shade range. The consistency of this foundation is neither too runny or thick but more so on the liquidy side. The foundation is squeezed out of a sturdy plastic bottle through a small nozzle and the consistency of the foundation allows it be controlled.
I have applied Skin Base with both a paddle foundation brush (Sigma F60), buffing brush (Real Techniques Expert Face Brush) and sponge (Beauty Blender) and the finish is quite nice but sometimes it doesn't look right if I used the wrong technique like wiping motion. I feel that when I use a pressing motion, the foundation blends better on to my skin. I can't remember if I used a primer with this one in the photos below, it might be Napoleon Perdis Mattifying primer on my T-zone.

I didn't use too much of the foundation and as you can see form the close up photo above, that the finish is very skin-like. Not everything is covered up and has a little bit of a shine/glow/not flat look going on. It does very well in evening out my skin and still making it look like skin. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't set and remains that glowy look and feel, so for my preference, it definitely needs some powder over the top but not necessary for everyone. Looks like the powders I used below gave me more colour too, haha! And I gave myself some crazy brows! XD

Longevity of the foundation is great except for around my oily areas like around my nose and chin, I could see separation there but it could be due to the compatibility with the primer as well. t also wore off wear my glasses sat which is what all my foundations do anyway. The rest of my face looked quite nice even without additional powder or blotting.
Half foundation | Full face foundation | Complete makeup
You can find Illamasqua products at certain Myer store and have other lovely products to check out. Skin Base foundation is retailed for AU$51 for 30ml of product which is very reasonable for a high end brand.

Have you tried any Illamasqua products?
