Weeks To Wed Pt 1: The Proposal

The countdown is on until my wedding day (although I'm still awaiting confirmation from my venue at the moment). So I've decided to start a series to document my wedding preparations and thoughts. Let me take you back to December 16 2012. It was our (counts on fingers) 7 year anniversary and to celebrate, I made Daniel sit through a few excruciating hours of dancing and singing at my annual dance concert. So romantic???

It was such a busy day. Full of quick changes, makeup and hair, and that was just little kids, and then I had to think about dressing myself! Luckily, I was only performing in three dances. After the concert, Daniel drove us back to Wollongong. I was soooo exhausted that I couldn't be bothered doing anything for our anniversary. We went for a walk along the beach and enjoyed the sunset (even though it was setting behind the mountain and not the ocean). We sat on the beach for a little while and reminisced about our lives. He told me how much he loved me and all that gross stuff (haha). I can't remember if we had anything for dinner. I'm thinking waffles but that part the evening is lost in my memory.

Afterwards, Daniel told me that he had to pop into uni for a little bit so he could finish some of his work. Of course I complained that I wanted to go home but he had to make sure it was done. So off we went. We weren't at the uni for very long and he told me that he to get something from the incubator (where they keep microbiological material).

At this point I should have seen it coming... but I didn't.

He fumbled around in there for a bit while I waited outside. When he came out he mumbled something about "not sure if it work" and if I "could have a look at it". He hands me an agar plate which read...

... he got down on one knee, opened a little blue box and asked me if I would marry him!!!

Note: If you're not science nerds like us, the above plate has a nutrient medium whereby bacteria and other microorganisms can grow. So the letters are actually made up of millions of bacteria clumped together! It's a pretty good swab if I say so myself.

To be continued...

  2. Haha oh the memories. Yeah we had waffles from sugar cube. I'd like to point out that that particular plate wasn't written by me but a good friend (thanks Bec!). My plates were hell dodgey. Missing you!

  3. Yep waffles were consumed, an important part of the plan. .. and Daniel and I each wrote on 2 plates to make sure there was a perfect one. I took them out at 1 am after thesis writing and looked forward to hearing how the next day went. To make it even more nerdy the e coli were genetically modified to express fragments of a protein our lab works on. ..
Was glad to be a part of it, and hopefully I can share lots in the future with you both.
