Oil Away That Makeup!

I remember watching a skin care routine video by Ingrid (or Missglamorazzi on YouTube) where she removed her makeup using a cleansing oil, MAC to be precise. It was the first time I've ever heard of such product and I was amazed. I bought the MAC Cleanse Off Oil earlier this year, and I really enjoy using it. Last month, I was in the MAC store in Sydney about to repurchase the oil but instead, I found myself in The Body Shop and walked out with their Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil.

Before cleansing oils, I religiously reliant on the Simple Cleansing Wipes to remove my makeup before bedtime. Don't get me wrong, I still love using them from time to time as they are gentle and moist. But since trying the Cleanse Off Oil, I wouldn't remove oils from my skincare routine. I was a bit sceptical about using oil to cleanse the skin. I wasn't sure about it's effectiveness or whether it would make my skin even oiler.

To my understanding (I could be wrong), cleansing oils work really well at removing excess oil, makeup and dirt from the skin as 'like dissolves like' (true chemist style). Oils are great for the skin as they don't strip the skin dry and leaving it tight. Sometimes we use harsh products or over-cleanse the skin which can lead to an over-production of oil or sebum (shiny/pimply face anyone?). Cleansing oils attracts the makeup and with the addition of some water, it emulsifies and lifts the makeup off the skin. Sounds pretty nice.

MAC Cleanse Off Oil (website, 150ml for $37)

This oil is formulated with olive oil, evening primrose oil, jojoba seed oil and Vitamin E as well as being free of mineral oil. This worked extremely well at removing my makeup, even waterproof mascara. I use a couple of pumps all over my face (dry) and gently massage over heavy makeup areas. I look like an oily panda/goth before I go over it with a little water which changes to a milky emulsion. This was very gentle on my skin so I didn't get any reactions and I didn't notice my skin getting any more oily. After using the oil, I would use a facial wash as my second cleanse.

The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil (website, 200ml for $26.95)

This oil feels a little runnier compared to the MAC one but it doesn't affect it's ability to remove makeup. It contains Community Fair Trade camomile oil sourced from England and is free from alcohol, fragrance, colour and preservatives. I use the same method to remove my makeup as the MAC one and I find it works just as good. I'm very pleased with that! Both products don't irritate my eyeballs but if they make contact with them, my vision gets a bit blurry (not that it matters as I have very poor eyesight!).

If you haven't tried a cleansing oil to remove your makeup, I strongly recommend trying one. And it definitely saves on the packaging and waste left with makeup removing wipes. I purchased both oils at their particular stores which was good as I got to test them out beforehand.
There are many other cleansing oils on there market, to name a few
La Roche-Posay Lipikar Cleansing Oil (here)
Sanctuary Spa Youth Boosting Cleansing Oil (here)
Dr Lewinn's Essentials 4 Fusion Cleansing Oil (here)
Dermalogica Precleanse (here)

Do you use a cleansing oil? Any other ones I should try?

  1. I use the Lush Ultrabland which has a lot of oil in it to help remove makeup, it works a charm! I haven't tried the MAC or Body Shop ones but they sound really lovely!
